Rita is a friend of mine. She's a bit older then me.  We just started our first year in Senior High School after our grade school exams. My other friends Amara, Michelle,Brad (Michelle's boyfriend) and the whole gang are in my new school with Rita and I.  Well, we're all friends since were 3 years old and we still have our club that
we have started a few years ago. I sometimes say: "You're never too old for the stuff you used to do when you're young" (and it's true).

Everyone is unique.they say,but Rita is a special person. She is smart, compassionate, she can run really fast in Gym class, sing better in choral practice and what is more amazing is that a Lunch hour she can eat four Honey Crunch bars from the vending machine without gaining any weight.

One Friday afternoon we were walking home from school at 2:10pm (we get out early on Fridays), I was asking the gang what was we doing for the
weekend after we are finished with our projects for our Biology class on Monday -we are studying Genetics and we we're doing a group project with the gang: A big poster-board about Chromosomes and Cell Division.
"Gee, I don't know Annie" said Brad.
"Yeah, I don't know either" said Leda.

We didn't know what to do, until Molly Baker got an idea.
"Why don't we go over to my house for the weekend,' she said We all agree, but Rita who had been kind of quiet at that moment whispered
"Count me out," we were all shocked by Rita's remark. I never heard her say that snice we've got out of school.
                  "But why?" I said.
                  "YEAH! WHY?" said the others.
"Because tomorrow's my birthday," said Rita. "I'm turning 16," we were amazed at what Rita said, I didn't know it's her birthday tomorrow.

Amy Andersen wished her a happy birthday, we all wished her a happy birthday and Rita said "Thank you guys," and Rachel Cooper (or 'Raye' as she likes to be called) suggested that instead of going to Molly's house, we can go to Rita's place to celebrate her birthday, but Rita said "NO!" and ran off home, but we all ran after her until we came up to her front porch.
"Rita!" I called out from the door as I knock it. "We're sorry, so please open the door."
"We could do our homework together like old times," said Amara.
"Yes please," said Mina Kilworth. Rita opened the door slowly and then looked at us and at last she said Okay"  and let us in.

We were very busy working on our project, writing down information, printing pictures from the computer and coloring the lettering with fine point markers. Rita's mom gave us cake with glasses of water because she always says, "Water is good for the brain."

At around 5pm we were finished and we went home, and I took the poster-board home with me 'til Monday. At home I told my parents what was wrong with Rita and tomorrow evening - and I have a feeling she's hiding something from us. Then I told them that I think that her birthday party would be a sort of "cheering-up party."

"That's a good idea," said my mom while she was washing the dishes,
"That's really nice of you, sweetheart," said my dad who was reading the paper and sipping herbal tea. It was decide I called the gang and told them about my plan. Molly said she's gonna bring some of her friends over and I said it's okay, and when I called Rita's family I told them to keep the plan a secret because it's a surprise.

On Saturday at 6:15pm we were all a Rita's house. I knocked at the door and when Rita answered it we all yell "SURPRISE!" Rita was amazed.
             "What's is this?" she said
"It's a birthday-cheering-up party,Rita." said Brad hand her a present he got her.

"Cheering-up party?" said a confused Rita, Well,I told her that she was feeling upset yesterday and we thought that we can make her birthday party a cheering-up party, and Rita told me that she was upset because afraid of growing up and wouldn't be able to do the stuff she (and all of us) used to do when we were kid and also having a hard time adjusting to high school these first few weeks, and she had been hiding these negative feelings inside.

           "That's it?" I said
"Yes," said Rita wiping away a tear. "That's it," I patted Rita on the shoulder and explain that her mom told me everything (that was when I was on the phone with her organizing the party) and that being a teenager is hard and you do feel a little a different from time to time and you'll get use to it soon.

"And besides," I said "my mom said there's other things you could when you're sixteen."
"Like shopping at the Mall with us," said Mina.
           "And studying," said Amy.
"Staying up late 'til midnight," said Brad.
"And driving a car," said Amara.
"And not to mention boys," said Leda. Rita gave a happy sigh and said thank you and we had great group hug, Rita also said that she's going to show us something special she had just discovered. So she led all of us to the backyard and we all sat on the picnic table - well, some of us sat on the ground.

"Now watch that cloud everyone," said Rita pointing to the nearest cloud in the sky, and we did watch an amazing sight, First a great shadow cast over our heads and then a stream of light blaze across the sky then the clouds form bright beautiful colors and the middle cloud burst out a shimmering rainbow waterfall, which glitter on our hands.

"Wow! that's neat Rita," I said "What is it?"
"It's cloud painting," said Rita smiling. "Anyone can do it,all you have to do is use
your imagination."
          "It's wonderful!" said Amy.
          "It's spectacular!"said Raye.
          "It's cool!" said Molly.
          "It's really beautiful," said Michelle.
There were lots of wows, laughing and opened hands to catch the sparkles, I always knew that Rita is a very special person since I've first met her,So I turned to her and said...
"Thank you for sharing this with us,Rita, you've maded us very happy"
"No thank you!" said Rita "Like I've said 'you're never too old for imagination' and this is the best birthday I had in all my life." And that's my story folks,so whenever you are lonely or sad just do what my friend Rita does...Cloud Paint

I did this short story for an English assignment when I was in the 10th grade. I was inspired by an episode of "The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" where the clouds shimmer and shine in bright colors and it made everyone happy.

The lesson I was going for was - "No matter how old you get there are some things you're never too old for" like your imagination and such; and in a way, I had made Rita like me.

That was a very cute story :3 I kind of know how Rita feels, when I turned 18, and then 20, I was really freaking out. It was scary to me. But then I realized...who's counting? It's ok to grow old, and even grow up, but you should always keep your childlike sense of wonder~
